ABOUT SCuM
Second Class Matter was founded as an
experiment in publishing. The creation of epic fiction traditionally
has fallen within the domain of the novel, and to a lesser extent, the
short story. Television and film have given us several memorable new
worlds, but in most cases the films and shows we are familiar with are
just the tip of the iceberg.
At Second Class Matter, we hope to open
the window on fictional worlds a little wider by unchaining writers
from the publishing constraints of traditional forms. Writers are free
to add miscellaneous scenes, histories, appendixes, glossaries,
disconnected descriptions, works of odd-length, overheard conversations
and anything else they can think of to paste flesh and feature on their
world. Or to fill their universe with deep and dark matter.
Second Class Matter is not a regular
publication. We add new content when new content is available.
Our name comes from the dateline of
Nineteenth Century penny dreadfuls: Entered into the Post Office
of New York City as second class matter.
